From Marion Boddy-Evans

If you're struggling with the concept of painting in an expressive style, think of it as letting the application of the paint do most of the talking rather than the realism of the subject. Someone looking at the finished painting should be able to share how you applied the paint, to experience the tactile qualities of paint and brush, to realize what they're looking at is something which could only be done in paint, as well as enjoy the subject of the painting.
