word

Painting from Marion Boddy-Evans
I learnt a new word this week, or rather discovered the art term for glazing with an opaque color, something I often do. So next time someone asks me how I created the mist in a seascape, I must remember to throw in the word "velatura"

A Good Lesson

Sandy gives us a good lesson Click on the link.

It's a perfect essay, I told my students. And we're going to read it to see how a perfect essay is written, and how you can learn to read for answers in one and then to write one.````Sandy

Gteat American Gothic, Chicago.....Sperit of the Midwest country of thr U.S.A.

My Hero..but I to stand so well against the storms

Top that Sandy !

Grant Wood’s American Gothic caused a stir in 1930 when it was exhibited for the first time at The Art Institute of Chicago and awarded a prize of 300 dollars. Newspapers across the country carried the story, and the painting of a farm couple posed before a white house brought the artist instant fame. The Iowa native, then in his late 30s, was enchanted by a cottage he had seen in the small southern Iowa town of Eldon. Its Gothic Revival style, indicated by the upper window designed to resemble a medieval pointed arch, inspired the painting’s title. He asked his dentist and his sister Nan to pose as a farmer and his unmarried daughter. The highly detailed style and rigid frontal arrangement of the figures were inspired by Northern Renaissance art, which the artist studied during three trips to Europe. After returning to Iowa, he became increasingly appreciative of the traditions of the Midwest, which he also celebrated in works such as this.

Looks like a coastal Southern California landscape. It's no longer warm here. The cold front is back after a week of sunshine. The rain is coming soon.Flying to Hawaii is your best bet.

PAINTING A SAINT

"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? It will be a hard pull for me; the tide rises high, almost to the lips and perhaps higher still, how can I know? But I shall fight my battle, and sell my life dearly, and try to win and get the best of it." - by Vincent Van Gogh (
1881)

Ebb Tide has left a new comment on your post "PAINTING A SAINT": Hi Lloyd! THANKS! THANKS! And more thanks for sharing my post and painting. Van is my favorite impressionist artist. Despite his craziness, he's an excellent artists. Right now I am re-reading his book "Dear Theo." It's an appropriate book for artist during this hard times. He was a struggling artist but he made the best of it.

Ebb Tide has left a new comment on your post "Sy watch for snow at Michigan Av.": Sorry, I don't mean to hurt you. Southern California is not Hawaii but we continue to bask in the sunlight this week. Who knows, the cold front might return soon. You have a beautiful blue sky in Chicago. Ten degrees but no snow on top of the buildings? WHY?

Winter watch

The Wall of Winter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The snow amd cold in the Chisago area is testing my survival skills. My Friend Susan, invitrd me To go to the DuSable Museum of African AmericanArt on Saturday. I had to beg off, because the snow was as high as an elaphamts eye. My short cut thru the woods was snow blocked. Thr rode to the train not blowed and walking impossible. To get there would be likee leaving a comment on Sandy’s Blog.

Ebb Tide has left a new comment on your post "Winter watch": Glad to know you're surviving the snow. We don't have snow where I am living. I don't want to load you up w/ more misery but I am enjoying our warm weather here. The forecast is.... good weather the whole week (sunshine in the 70's & 80's).I needed this warmth, so I can organize my stuffs in the garage, to be able to start my paintings. Our garage was like a freezer during the holiday. Couldn't do much. I became like a stiff frosty the snowman.

Thankyou for your warm words. You know how to hurt a guy!!!!!!Lloyd frosty one

plus 2 and blowing snow tonight. I can not remenber such a cold winter, must be global warming? `Lloys

Say I Love You with Kindness

kindness is important, that as much as we might know about someone, there is plenty we don't know, that we can't begin to imagine the effect of our words so we must choose them carefully, that silence is a gift only when we are present to give it. That loving our friends is a priority, not something to do when there is nothing else to do. That kindness is everything. Experiences like this one have taught me:Be kind.Be honest.Be kind.Be open.Be kind.Be generous.Be kind.Be loving.Be kind.Be humble.Be kind.Read everything. Twice. With heart. Never forget the power of touch even if you have to use words. And be kind. And happy new year, dear friends.
